First of all I found this article fairly interesting actually, call me a nerd, I don't really care. I thought that it was really neat how even though her mother was far from being fluent in English, she and her daughter were still able to communicate through speaking English. It made me think of all of the different ways that I find myself speaking in various social groups, like when I am with my friends at school I might find myself talking in a completely different manner than I might at home or at youth group. It also made me think about those relationships that I have where all I have to do is look at the other person in a certain way and they instantly know what I am thinking or how I feel. The relationship that the writer and her mother share is very similar, it is one where they have become so used to each other and the way that they may say things, that they dont have to use conventional modes of communication, such as subject verb agreement and other proper grammatical structures.
I would also like to comment on the statement made by the writer, "Asian students, as a whole, always do significantly better on math achievement tests than in English". I had read a book in one of my classes that mentioned this certain phenomena, it talked about the minds capability to memorize things in a five second interval. It also went on to talk about how their language allowed them to say strings of numbers much quicker. So when the two were combined it allowed Asians to excel in math. However I also see where the author is coming from in this situation as well because good parents are going to help there children to the best of their ability, so when it comes to trying to help their children with English, they are not going to be able to contribute as much as they would be able to with math.
