The story Scudder tells as he recounts his days as a young zoology student may be found dull to some readers and just might be but the underlying message of the essay that Scudder’s professor taught him is a valuable lesson in science and life and he relays this to his readers. After thinking he had seen all there is to be seen in a fish scudder searches for the professor but he is gone and that is perhaps when he first realizes what the professor meant by ,“look at it”. I like the tone of the essay and the descriptive words scudder uses while writing. I felt his confusion and panic as he was told to sleep on his knowledge of this fish before telling the professor what he knows in the morning as I related the feeling of truly trying to understanding information before a big test or exam. I felt also the moment when scudder realizes the real lesson behind his task and how the fish serves as a metaphor for anything in zoology or life that you see or you are trying to understand must be truly understood in all its depth to fully be seen.
